Edit Metadata Section
[edit]The imported metadata placed in the Metadata section is wrong for the File:Antique Pasta Press P001 crop.jpg. When it uploaded, it added in Short title: "I. DeFrancisci&Son Screw Press Model 1914" instead of I. DeFrancisci & Son Screw Press Model 1914". It looks like it did not like the ampersand. Is there a way to fix that? Thanks. Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 14:35, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
- @FieldMarine: I cannot find the problem you are referring to. Is this something you have already fixed yourself? If not, can you be more precise about the location of the problematic text? - Jmabel ! talk 17:12, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
- The uploader wants to edit the metadata. In the line "Short title". By replacing the code for the ampersand (ampersand amp semicolon) with " & " (space ampersand space). -- Asclepias (talk) 17:51, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
- Meaning the EXIF metadata? (Everything but the picture is metadata, I thought they were referring either to wikitext or SDC).
- As far as I know, the only way to change EXIF content is to download, edit, and re-upload. You can either use EXIFtool or (on Windows) the editing that is built into the Windows "properties" capability (in the "details" section of "properties"). - Jmabel ! talk 18:08, 31 July 2025 (UTC)

- Interesting. A Mediawiki API query confirms that the incorrect text is in the metadata that Commons extracted automatically from the media, it's not just rendered wrong in the default interface for the page. The weird part isn't even that the ampersand is converted to a HTML escape, but that the space around it are eaten. The file itself has “I. DeFrancisci & Son Screw Press Model 1914” in its IPTC and XMP metadata, so this doesn't appear to be an error in the file. Since this appears to be something Mediawiki has done, you may have to bug report it. – b_jonas 11:28, 2 August 2025 (UTC)
- @B jonas and Jmabel: Thanks for looking at this. The ampersand was present in the title section of the metadata of the file when I originally uploaded it. As a test, I blanked the title in the metadata and re-added it using Exiftool. I then checked the metadata info using Exiftool and it was correct under "title". I added the file again and got exactly the same error. Interestingly, it looks like this problem only occurs when using an ampersand in the title section. As you can see in this file, the ampersand is correctly written in the author section.
How do you report a potential bug? Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 23:36, 9 August 2025 (UTC)- @FieldMarine: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/. For some things COM:Village pump/Technical can be useful, but almost certainly not for this. - Jmabel ! talk 23:51, 9 August 2025 (UTC)

Uploding futsal club logos
[edit]I would like to upload the logos of amateur futsal clubs. Most of them ceased operation years ago. I have no one to ask for the permission. Am I allowed to apply those logos? Zoran Stojanovic (talk) 22:31, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Zoran Stojanovic: Whether the club still exists or not has no bearing on whether the logos retain copyright. There is some chance that the copyright remains with the person who designed the logo; there is some chance the copyright belongs to whoever is the successor to their assets; assets might even have been individually sold. So if the logos are complex enough to be copyrighted and if (almost inevitably) they are not old enough to have aged out of copyright, they are copyrighted and you'd have a hard time even determining who would hold the copyright and could possibly issue a license. Very tough to work through obtaining any sort of license for something like that, probably not worth trying in my opinion.
- If you can give URLs for some of the simpler logos in question, someone might be able to tell you whether they are so simple as to be ineligible for copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 04:29, 1 August 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you. These are amateur clubs, I don't think the copyright belongs to anyone who cares, but I won't upload anything without the consent. Moving images in the same two categories into a single one
[edit]Is there any efficient way of moving multiple images that share the same two categories into one singular category? This would be beneficial as it'd help me not rack up so many edits. Aethonatic (talk) 21:24, 2 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Aethonatic: Hi, and welcome. Have you tried Cat-a-lot? — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:52, 2 August 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, but I'm not aware of any functionality it has that allows for batch moving of images from two categories into one. Aethonatic (talk) 21:55, 2 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Aethonatic: What categories are you writing about? — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 22:13, 2 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: I initially thought about this so I could efficiently move images in both Category:Alexander Dennis Enviro200 MMC integral buses in the United Kingdom and Category:Trentbarton (bus company) to Category:Alexander Dennis Enviro200 MMC integral buses of Trentbarton. I've already moved the images, but I'm still inquiring about this in case there's a way that allows for there to be one edit done to each image that sorts out the categories. Aethonatic (talk) 22:18, 2 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Aethonatic: Those categories have: 7 C, 455 F; 2 C, 223 F; and 95 F (respectively). You want everything in Category:Alexander Dennis Enviro200 MMC integral buses of Trentbarton? What is to be done with the old categories, once they are empty? — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 22:43, 2 August 2025 (UTC)
- Like I've said, I've already moved the images myself. I should've asked this question before doing so in hindsight, but I think getting an answer now would be sufficient in the event I need to do something like this again in the future.
- To be clear, I'm not talking about moving all of the images in each category, only the ones that cover both subjects/share both categories. Aethonatic (talk) 22:45, 2 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Aethonatic: you first access one parent category and use Cat-a-Lot to move the chosen images from that category to the new category. Then you navigate to the new category and use Cat-a-lot to remove the other parent category from all images. - Jmabel ! talk 00:22, 3 August 2025 (UTC)

Can I upload this image?
[edit]The first image here (https://phys.org/news/2015-07-bacteria-photosynthetic.html), with the caption: "University of Illinois researchers used the Titan supercomputer at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility to create a model of a complete 100-million-atom photosynthetic chromatophore", is from the same people that made this one:
Since the above file is open access, is it safe to assume that the other one (on phys.org) can also be used? Both media are from the same study (https://doi.org/10.7554/eLife.09541) depicting the same subject, using the same model, but with the only difference that the one already uploaded is a video while the other is a still image. CheckNineEight (talk) 00:56, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
- The article is under CC BY 4.0 but this image does not seem to be in the images of the article. -- Asclepias (talk) 02:40, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
- But does that mean I can still take the phys.org image anyway? CheckNineEight (talk) 06:06, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
- The license of the article does not cover material that is not in the article. Phys.org is not under a free license and is not the rights holder of the image. It credits M. Sener and A. Singharoy for the image. If you really want to use this particular image, you can contact one of them and ask if it is published under a free license and where they published it. The image might be under a free license in the original publication. If so, try to copy the image directly from the free publication, not from a non-free intermediary. If the image was never published under a free license, and if the authors agree to issue a free license now at your request, ask them to send the permission directly to Wikimedia, following the procedure described at Commons:VRT. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:12, 3 August 2025 (UTC)

File identification issue for File:Smith Observatory and Dr. William R. Brooks House.jpg
[edit]After reviewing the information on the Wikipedia page which uses File:Smith Observatory and Dr. William R. Brooks House.jpg, I've come to believe that the houses depicted are not the observatory and house. However, I based this identification on coordinates on the Wikipedia and Wikidata entries, and I believe those also need to be reviewed. Not sure what to do. (If it does turn out this isn't the place, I also want the file deleted. It serves no purpose if it does not depict the place.) Packer1028 (talk) 03:00, 3 August 2025 (UTC)

- If they are inaccurate, you can correct them. The house is at the corner of Castle street and Highland avenue. On Google maps in decimals the observatory seems approximately at 42.87263N 77.00252W. -- Asclepias (talk) 05:19, 3 August 2025 (UTC)

Organizing category by year
[edit]Hi, so Category:Norodom Sihanouk is pretty unorganized. How do I make a "by year" set of categories like in other categories of photos of people? TansoShoshen (talk) 07:25, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
- @TansoShoshen: I would say there are not enough images there to merit by-year categories. If you want, though, you could add sort keys (e.g., for a given file, turn into ). That would put the existing files in chronological order. Of course, you'd want to check now and then for new files, because it's not a self-maintaining scheme. - Jmabel ! talk 17:01, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
- Or perhaps create a main namespace gallery page for this monarch, and put a selection of media into it, possibly including those from some subcategories. This would be on Norodom Sihanouk, which currently redirects to the category, but if you create a gallery page then you can break that redirect, just make sure to add the gallery page into that category. – b_jonas 11:22, 7 August 2025 (UTC)

Permission to copy and use a file photo
[edit]Lt. John Bulkely photo file # g14252.jpg. I am writing the Centennial book of Del Monte Philippines. The book will feature the 1942 escape of Gen. MacArthur from Corregidor island to Australia via the Del Monte plantation in Mindanao. Lt. Bulkely was the skipper of PT41, which ferried MacArthur, his family and staff from Corregidor to Mindanao. May I have Wikimedia's permission use the above-cited photo of Lt. Bulkely? The book of course will give ample credit to Wikimedia. Please advise as well if there are fees to be paid. -- MANNY NISPEROS My contact: NisperosER@delmonte-phil.com MannyNisperos (talk) 08:58, 4 August 2025 (UTC)

- @MannyNisperos: You do not need a permission from Wikimedia. Anyway Wikimedia cannot give a permission because it does not hold a copyright. There are no fees. You do not need to "give credit to" Wikimedia. If you use this particular copy, you may, if you wish, mention Wikimedia merely as a source, but that is not an obligation. However, as mentioned relatively to your other question below, you may prefer to use a copy from another source. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:38, 4 August 2025 (UTC)
Photo of Lt. John D. Bulkely - file # g14252.jpg
[edit]The file details say "this is in the public domain in the United States." Does the latter mean I can't use the above-captioned photo in a book that will be published (in English) in the Philippines, and distributed for free to company employees and retirees of Del Monte Philippines? -- MANNY NISPEROS <NisperosER@delmonte-phil.com> MannyNisperos (talk) 09:44, 4 August 2025 (UTC)
- @MannyNisperos:
- The banner that states "it is in the public domain in the United States" indicates only the status of the photo in the United States. It does not apply to other countries. The Copyright Act of the United States makes the works of the U.S. government free from copyright in the United States only.
- "The prohibition on copyright protection for United States Government works is not intended to have any effect on protection of these works abroad. Works of the governments of most other countries are copyrighted. There are no valid policy reasons for denying such protection to United States Government works in foreign countries, or for precluding the Government from making licenses for the use of its works abroad." [3]
- "Outside the U.S., the protection of U.S. government works is dependent upon the laws of that country. This is due to national treatment in the international copyright treaties, which means that you apply the law where the work is being used. Thus, if a U.S. government document is being photocopied in Canada or Italy, you apply the copyright laws of Canada or Italy. This means that in some situations, an unprotected work in the U.S. will be protected in another country. It also means that a U.S. government department may be approached for copyright clearance in a work that may be freely available in the U.S. but may be protected by copyright in another country." [4]
- A book distributed in the Philippines must comply with the law of the Philippines.
- The status of a photo in the Philippines is determined by the law of the Philippines. That law states that photos are under copyright in the Philippines for 50 years after the publication.
- The source for this copy of the photo states that the photo was made circa 1942. The year of publication is not indicated. There are probably good chances that it was published before 1975 and in the public domain in the Philippines.
- Note that you can obtain a copy of this photo in much higher resolution from other sources, for example www.history.navy.mil.
- For more recent U.S. government works that may be under copyright in countries outside of the United States, permission for use can be requested from the relevant United States governmental organization that controls the work. Sometimes, such organizations offer their works, for example on the website flickr, under a free license, which applies worldwide and facilitates and guarantees the safe use of those works in other countries outside of the United States without the need to request additional permission. When a work is already in the public domain under the law of the other countries where the work is used, a permission or a license is not needed.

Headshots using AI
[edit]Hi there,
Is it okay to upload a headshot that was created using AI tools, for example via a service like “Mr. Headshot” or similar?
I generated the image myself using several selfies. There are no copyright claims from a third party – it’s based on my own likeness, but made through an AI photo tool. Can I upload this to Wikimedia Commons using CC BY-SA 4.0?
Any restrictions I should know of? Thanks, Murad Muradbayraktar (talk) 16:59, 5 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Muradbayraktar: Hi, There may not be copyright issues, but it would be out of scope because you do not have enough useful contributions on Wikimedia projects. We do not accept personal pictures unless people contribute somehow. Yann (talk) 17:11, 5 August 2025 (UTC)

- Sorry, but: which air force? You didn't say anything about the nationality, and it's not really apparent from the logo alone. Cardinalis cardinalis gallery taxonavigation links to wrong genus
[edit]In the gallery page Cardinalis cardinalis for an animal species, the taxonavigation box at the top links to Cardinalis, which is a redirect to a the gallery page Lobelia for a plant genus. I'm not familiar with how the biology taxonomy system works on Commons, so I'm not sure what the problem is here and how to fix it. What should I do here? Is there a taxonomy help desk where I should ask questions like this?
The category page Category:Cardinalis cardinalis for the animal species does not have this problem: its taxonavigation box links to the category Category:Cardinalis for what I think is the correct animal. It doesn't seem like there's a gallery page for the animal genus, so perhaps the gallery page for the species should have a red link.
– b_jonas 18:33, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
- @B jonas: It's because gallery page Cardinalis is a redirect (probably shouldn't be), whereas Category:Cardinalis is not, and taxonavigation for gallery pages uses gallery pages, while taxonavigation for categories uses categories. I don't know the topic well enough to say confidently whether we should just delete gallery page redirect Cardinalis; I believe we don't do gallery-page disambiguation pages, so that's not an option. (In the event that it should be kept, it should redirect to Lobelia cardinalis, not to Lobelia.) Can someone who works more with taxonomy please weigh in? - Jmabel ! talk 23:30, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
- I added a hatnote to the gallery page Lobelia for now. This doesn't solve the original problem, Cardinalis cardinalis still has the wrong link, but it's needed anyway for when a reader visits Cardinalis directly by name. If the redirect from Cardinalis is removed then we can remove that hatnote too. – b_jonas 11:30, 9 August 2025 (UTC)

Files wrongly named/identified in a category
[edit]What is the appropriate process for initiating action for files that are wrongly named and categorised ? Copyright question re 1976 newspaper article
[edit]Hello! I'm trying to update/correct a page that incorrectly states that Traci Lords' mother attended Ohio University (in Athens, Ohio). The page cites Traci's autobiography as the source, but the autobiography is mistaken. A 1976 front-page article from the Steubenville Herald Star shows Lords' mother in Steubenville (and not Athens, Ohio) as part of a famous Harvard Lung Study. Lords' mother attended the College of Steubenville, not Ohio University. Can I upload/link to a pdf or image of the article? I think it qualifies as fair use for research and scholarship. Thank you! GenealogyFan70 (talk) 20:12, 8 August 2025 (UTC)
- @GenealogyFan70: it might, but Commons does not host files on a fair use basis. We host only files that are either in the public domain or free-licensed (also, they need to be so both in their country of origin and in the United States).
- I'm not sure why you want to upload this to Commons, though, in any event. Assuming that this is about a Wikipedia article, offline sources are perfectly valid to cite. If you just need a copy to show someone who is questioning your citation, there are plenty of other ways than a Commons upload to do that. - Jmabel ! talk 05:21, 9 August 2025 (UTC)

Question about copyright
[edit]Hello! I am interested in the works of Category:Works of Dimitri Tavadze for a potential publication and can see that there is a statement saying that:
"This work is free and may be used by anyone for any purpose. If you wish to use this content, you do not need to request permission as long as you follow any licensing requirements mentioned on this page. The Wikimedia Foundation has received an e-mail confirming that the copyright holder has approved publication under the terms mentioned on this page. This correspondence has been reviewed by a Volunteer Response Team (VRT) member and stored in our permission archive. The correspondence is available to trusted volunteers as ticket #2014041110014896."
Would it be possible at all to have access to this archived correspondence/ticket or to any official documentation to verify that the work is indeed free of copyright restrictions? (with correct attribution, of course). It is very difficult otherwise to see how to go about finding the original copyright holder.
It would also be great to know where the images are sourced from. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pigadiotissa (talk • contribs) 09:53, 10 August 2025 (UTC)

PDF preview does not show
[edit]Hi! I just uploaded this File:Супрасльская рукопись содержащая Новгородскую и Киевскую сокращенные 1836.pdf yesterday, but for some reason, it does not show a preview here on Commons, and I cannot use it in English Wikipedia or anywhere else as an image. For example, at en:User:Nederlandse Leeuw/Supraśl Manuscript, I'm working on a concept article in which I'd like to show page 27 as an illustration. But when I try to do that by typing

...it does not display. Even if I type it out without a : here,

, it just shows up as a link to its documentation page rather than a picture of page 27 with a thumbnail around it, and a caption under it (as if I had put a : in front of "File:", as I did in the 2nd sentence of this post above). It works fine with other PDF files, e.g.

...which I added to en:Recto and verso yesterday without issues.
What's going on? I've never had this with PDF files before. Good day, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 11:44, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
- PS: That the file name uses Cyrillic letters rather than Latin letters cannot be the reason for this malfunction. For example, File:Радзивіллівський літопис.pdf and File:Лаврентіївський літопис.pdf are currently used in en:Textual variants in the Primary Chronicle#Legend without issue. Copyright help regarding File:Still from Israeli government ad.jpg
[edit]I have uploaded this image, which comes from an Israeli government advertisement for YouTube. I found it in a Third World Quarterly study that the author made available for free here. I have no doubt that the file is (edit: not) copyrighted, but how do I report it here? --Rafe87 (talk) 22:35, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Rafe87: if it is copyrighted, and does not have a free license, then it does not belong on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 02:09, 11 August 2025 (UTC)
- It is obviously not copyrighted. It's a still from a YouTube ad that appeared in a free access academic paper. I merely took a screenshot of the paper. Rafe87 (talk) 02:57, 11 August 2025 (UTC)
- (You said above that you have "no doubt that it is copyrighted", now you are saying it is "obviously not copyrighted." To me, those statements sound exactly opposite one another, but I will presume that the latter is what you mean.)
- "Free access academic paper" has no bearing on copyright: free access does not imply a license to reproduce. https://www.tandfonline.com/terms-and-conditions says, "The Materials are protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws and treaties around the world. All such rights are reserved," and nothing in the section "Usage rights for Free Materials" suggests any right to reproduce content beyond saving a single copy for your personal use. Also, the paper is explicitly marked "© 2025 Global South Ltd" so the claim that the paper is "not copyrighted" (vs. some possibility that it is licensed, in a way I can't find) is particularly odd.
- But even that is probably beside the point, and I only addressed it because you raised it. Quoting/copying a copyrighted work in a paper does not change the status of the copyrighted work. The issue is the copyright and licensing status of the work of the Israeli government. Why would the YouTube ad (or this still from the YouTube ad) not be copyrighted? Its appearing in a paper is irrelevant. - Jmabel ! talk 03:16, 11 August 2025 (UTC)
- I misspoke. The still image is not copyrighted. The image originally comes from a public video released by the Israeli ministry, not from the author of the article or the journal for which he wrote, so Taylor & Francis Online's terms of service are irrelevant, as the group clearly does not hold the rights here. The fact that the author of the article was able to take a screenshot of the video and incorporate it into his article demonstrates that there is no copyright. I don't understand why copyright would apply to Wikipedia but not to Third World Quarterly. Reverse searching the image also shows it made the rounds among many media outlets.

- The fact that a work is reproduced in academic papers and news media does not demonstrate that there is no copyright on the work. Laws of most countries have provisions equivalent to "fair use" that allow use of copyrighted works in such particular contexts. But the works are not freely usable by anyone in any context. Therefore such works cannot be hosted on Commons. However, upload of a non-free image to en.wikipedia might be allowed with a "non-free use" rationale for use in relevant context in an article. You can ask for advice on en:Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:10, 11 August 2025 (UTC)

- It is obviously not copyrighted. It's a still from a YouTube ad that appeared in a free access academic paper. I merely took a screenshot of the paper. Rafe87 (talk) 02:57, 11 August 2025 (UTC)

- @Halkat Idrees Abid:
- This is not Wikipedia, this is Wikimedia Commons.
- The way you can have your own page in Wikipedia is to become famous enough that someone unconnected to you creates one. Do not write one about yourself! (See en:WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY.)
